From its earliest days Colesberg has been a bustling resting and meeting place, a gateway to the north for explorers and hunters. The town is still a traveller's oasis on the main routes to the interior and the coastline. Here the N1 and the N9 meet, and the town is the southern gateway to the Lake Xariep tourist route (R58) which covers the Gariep Dam, Norvalspont, Venterstad, Oviston and Bethulie.
The Colesberg-Kemper Museum with its 19th century toy collection memorabilia is also the permanent house to the UNISA Karoo Nomad Photographic Exhibition. Together with the Anglo Boer War sites and a fine selection of 19th century buildings Colesberg offers an exciting reflection on the past and present. Close by is a 9 hole golf course with challenging Karoo fairways but well maintained greens and a well equipped club house. Other facilities in town include tennis courts, cycling and walking routes, bird watching and the unique sunrises and sunsets. Excellent restaurants, a museum, shops and a supermarket are all within walking distance from the backpackers. |
