DESCRIPTION:

Situated in the Makuleke Region in the northernmost part of Kruger National Park, The Outpost Lodge rests high on a hill overlooking the flood plains of the Limpopo and Luvuvhu rivers. This region is formerly known as the Pafuri region. The Outpost Lodge is in a way a partnership between the lodge and the Makuleke people. The event of the lodge is inextricably linked to the history of the Makuleke people. The historical background of the Makuleke people is best explored by a visit to the Makuleke Village in the capable hands of a Makuleke guide.

Guests are accommodated in 12 stand alone en-suite living rooms called "The Spaces" that are placed alongside a walkway on the side of a hill overlooking the Luvuvhu River. The Spaces are of contemporary design with retractable canvas screens and frontage offering 180 degree views of the Luvuvhu River Valley. The open feel of the rooms are extended into full bathrooms equipped with concrete baths and open showers. These rooms offer spectacular views that extend as far as Mozambique. Notwithstanding its remote location, The Outpost Lodge strives to provide excellent cuisine. The style of food reflects its African surroundings.

The region measures some 24000 hectares and is well known for its abundant wildlife including less common species not evident in the southern and central regions of the park. The diverse terrain of the region includes Mopane woodlands, fever tree forests, acacia thickets as well as some of the largest and oldest baobab specimens. Guests will be offered a choice of a long or short game drive in the morning and again in the mid afternoon. Game drives will be conducted by qualified and experienced guides in open-air four wheel drive vehicles. Guided walks can also be conducted in parts of the region not accessible to vehicles including the spectacular Lanner Gorge.

DIRECTIONS:

From Johannesburg

Take the N1 north to Zimbabwe. Travel for approximately 57km after the turn-off to Louis Trichardt (when you have just passed through the Baobab Toll Gate), you’ll find the R525 turn-off to Tshipise and Pafuri to your right hand side. Take this turn-off to your right and proceed along the R525, straight on past the turn-off to Tsiphise. Please be careful of stray cattle and wild donkeys and goats on this road. Further along the R525 you will also pass through the Masisi boom (this access boom is approximately 111km from the R525 turn-off from the N1).

Enter the Kruger National Park through Pafuri Gate. Please tell the gate guard that you are staying at The Outpost and he will reduce your entry fee into the Kruger Park from R120 per person per day to R40 per person per day. From this gate travel until you see the sign for The Outpost (approx 5.6km). The sign is built from rocks and is on the left hand side of the road. Turn right at the sign and follow the dirt road for 4km.

Please take note, the service station at Tshipise is the last service station along the route so please check your fuel as it is still approximately 120km to The Outpost Lodge from there. There is no fuel pump at Pafuri Gate, so please ensure you have enough fuel for your journey back to Tshipise, or southwards through the Kruger National Park after staying at The Outpost Lodge. The last cellphone reception is at Tshipise, so if you need to make a call, make it then.
