Being at the very heart of South Africa and astride major holiday routes are among Pula House's great advantages. Halfway between Johannesburg and the Eastern Cape coast, as well as between Cape Town and Durban or the Drakensberg via the spectacular Eastern Free State, make it the ideal overnight break. An excellent base for exploring the area, it is the recommended stop for visitors travelling from the Cape to Lesotho.

From Johannesburg (approx. 530km) 5 hours. Take the N1 route from Johannesburg to Cape Town. On the Bloemfontein by-pass (approximately 3½ hours from Johannesburg) take Exit 177 onto the N6 holiday route. About 135km later as the N6 enters Smithfield turn left into Douglas St. at the Pula House sign.

From Cape Town (approx. 930km) apx. 9 hours. On the N1 northwards towards Johannesburg, pass Colesberg and approximately 35km later cross the Orange River and take the next exit, No 8, onto the R701 sign posted Bethulie. Follow the signs to Bethulie (approximately 48km) and then to Smithfield and Pula House (about 65km later).

From Durban (apx. 600km - 7 hours) & Drakensburg Park (apx 550km - 6 hours) Do yourselves a favour and leave the N3 after Estcourt and take the R74 via Winterton and Bergville and then the R712 through the Golden Gate National Park to Clarens - it's beautiful. The R711 joins the R26 to Rouxville, with the mountains of Lesotho accompanying you most of the way.

From Eastern Cape directly up the N6 from East London. (approx. 4½ hours)

From Port Elizabeth via the N10 to Cradock and then on the R390 via Venterstad to join the R701 at Bethulie and then into Smithfield (approx. 6 hours)

From George via the N10 to Middelburg then on the R56 to Steynsburg and the R390 to the R701 at Bethulie and into Smithfield. (7½ hours)
