Information about Paardeplaats Nature Retreat

Break away to tranquility and total privacy in the mountains at this pristine nature retreat and trout farm, 12km on the Longtom Pass, high up in the Mpumalanga Drakensberg. The historical Paardeplaats is a restored gold mining settlement reminiscent of the 1870's and the time of Percy Fitzpatrick, when diggers found their treasures along the Whisky Spruit.

Three miners units comprise of six elegant bedrooms - 4 for couples with queen / king / twin beds, a family room with king and single bed and an upstairs room with four single beds - sleep a total of 15 people comfortably. The Miners Canteen with fireplace and well equipped kitchen with wood stove, can cater for up to 20 people.

Enjoy late evenings at the open cooking hearth on the spacious verandah overlooking two trout dams and spectacular mountain views. Enjoy lovely nature walks along 700 ha of pristine landscape and historical gold mine diggings, fly fishing, and unequalled serenity. Solar lights and gas are reminders of a bygone era, supplying lights and electricity in an old-fashioned way, with no compromise in comfort. This is a hikers and birders paradise with the scarce Gurney sugar bird, blue and crowned cranes and impressive Stanley bustard breeding on the farm. Wild horses and small game roam the fields. For a group or small family gathering, with a different feel and in total luxurious privacy, visit this jewel at the Jesus Hill, close to Lydenburg and not far from Sabie and other Lowveld attractions.

Enquire about our Saucy Chef cookery courses, also very popular for theme or team events.
