Kimberley is the capital of the Northern Cape. In 1866 Erasmus Jacobs found a small white pebble on the banks of the Orange River, which turned out to be a rough diamond. Later in 1871, and even larger diamond (16.7g) was discovered. These findings inevitably led to the first diamond rush into the area. As excavations increased a large central pit was formed, which became known as the "Big Hole" - the largest hand-dug excavation in the world. Today this is a major tourist attraction in the area, together with the Kimberley Mine Museum (alongside) which houses a rich collection of articles and information from the early days of the city. Underground mine tours are also popular, as are the famous ghost tours, during which many historical buildings can be seen from a different perspective. In addition, the McGregor Museum houses an invaluable collection of archaeological finds in the area, as well as numerous San art works. |
