The Northern Cape is the most north-west province of South Africa. Characterised by its vast expanses of space and silence, blazing summer sunshine and interesting people, the Northern Cape is rich with culture.
The province is made up of the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, which forms part of a Transfrontier Park with Botswana. It also includes the Augrabies Falls and the diamond mining regions around Kimberley and Alexander Bay. The Namaqualand region (in the west) is famous for its daisies during spring, and plays host to a festival of colour that attracts visitors from around the world. Towards the south, the towns of De Aar and Colesburg (within the Great Karoo), provide major transport nodes between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
Unspoilt desert, dunes and rivers make this an idilic setting for modern-day adventure seekers wanting to avoid the crowds, and reconnect with mother nature as she once was.
Major tourist attractions within the area include: - The diamond mining town of Kimberley with its "Big Hole".
- The Augrabie Falls near Upington.
- The Kgalagadi Transfontier Park at the border with Botswana.
- Namaqualand - during the spring months to witness the abundant wild flowers.
- Paragliding above Kuruman.
