Merwenstein is a working fruit and wine farm in one of the most beautiful valleys in the Breede River Valley. Here Hugo farms together with his two brothers towards all the nature friendly trends in agriculture but also for the well being of people. Persimmons and pommegranates that are high in Vitamin C and anti-oxidants are some of the new fruit that is grown on the farm.
The guest house has 3 en-suite rooms and guests receive very personal attention and are taken on guided walking farm tours. One room and the house are designed so that a person in a wheelchair can get easily around. Dinner is a family affair and Heidi blends South African / Malay style cooking with recipes from her Xhosa friends. The house has a panorama guest lounge with an alpine fireplace for chilly winter days. The rooms have private entrances from the lush palm garden and shaded patios. Outside in the garden there is a trampoline at ground level and a big swimming pool. Harvesting of different fruits already starts end of November and until end of May. Visitors can pick and choose some fruit for themselves. There is always a special treat on the breakfast table which is freshly pressed pommegranate juice.
Guests can take relaxing walks through the orchards and vineyards, while appreciating the abundant birdlife. The farm also has a fish eagle nesting on the Breede River. River trips can be organised and Swellendam is only 40km away. Bonnievale has a cheese factory with a glass walkway to see how the local cheeses are being made and there is also a nine hole golf course at the outdoor arena. There are many activities that are great fun for the whole family. Come and visit the Merwenstein Fruit & Wine Farm and experience our friendly hospitality!
