DESCRIPTION:

On the banks of the Komati River, at the base of a miniature Grand Canyon, this small village of thatched dwellings provides affordable luxury accommodation in a most dramatic setting. This untouched expanse of 1200ha with its thorn bushveld and highveld grassland offers an unparalleled experience to nature lovers. The biodiversity creates a perfect environment for the prolific birdlife and a wide range of indigenous trees, shrubs and wild flowers. Wherever you look, you will see breathtaking scenes of natural beauty.

Komati Gorge is an easy 2.5 hour drive from Gauteng, and provides a scenic midway stop-over from Gauteng to the Kruger National Park. Fishing is available in 3 fabulous new trout dams and in 5km of river. Feel pampered and spoilt in our luxury suites. (See our "Rates" page for further descriptions). The cosy pub and restaurant offers a good selection of South Africa's favourite foods and wines. Light pub meals and salads are also available. Join us for big sporting events on TV or enjoy sundowners on the veranda overlooking the Komati River. The breakfast room offers both relaxed and intimate dining, with a log fire. Enjoy a complementary sherry in our lounge area while you curl up in front of the fire on a cold winter's night, or relax in the cool of the thatch on a hot summers evening.

Conference facilities for up to 26 guests are available on a day's visit, and sleeping is provided for 16 persons (single) or up to 20 people sharing. We also have a swimming pool, DSTV, quad bike rides and plenty more - all at affordable prices!

DIRECTIONS:

From Johannesburg

Proceed on the N4 past Witbank, Middelburg and Belfast on to Machadodorp.

After Belfast, watch out for "Milly's" (on your left). The turn-off to Machadodorp is 3.6km after Milly's. Turn right off the highway towards the town. Be careful - this is a very bad intersection. After turning off, travel 500m to the first stop sign. There is a BP garage on your right. Turn right here and you will be on the R36 to Carolina. There is no cell phone reception past Machadodorp.

You can also go via Carolina as the road is now much improved but is slightly longer. Proceed to the second stop street in town. There is a BP garage on your left. Turn left into Kerk Street. It becomes the R36 to Machadodorp. After 25km look out for the "Doornkop" sign and turn right.

Carry on for 25.9km from the stop street until you see the "Doornkop" sign. Turn left. You can, in any case, only turn one way. Proceed on gravel road for 4.6km until you see the green sign to "Komati Gorge". Turn left here. If you get to Doornkop, you have gone too far! You will immediately cross a low water bridge across the Komati River. Proceed for a further 2km. You will pass through big silver gates marked "no admittance" - Don't worry carry on! Cross a second bridge. Immediately thereafter the road forks - keep left as indicated by the sign to Komati Gorge. Proceed for a further 3km. You will go up a hill and thereafter down a steep concrete road. The Komati Gorge complex is at the bottom of the hill. The restaurant is on your left and reception is on your right.
