Gauteng, the "Place of Gold", is the economic powerhouse of South Africa. It plays host to a large number of overseas companies requiring a commercial landbase in Africa. Although the smallest province in South Africa, it is highly urbanised, and is characterised by a cosmopolitan, multicultural mix of people from all walks of life. The province's unique cultural and social legacy is evident by the many excellent museums, theatres, cultural precincts and craft markets.
A summer rainfall area, Gauteng experiences hot summer days that often result in short but intense afternoon thunderstorms. Winter is dry and cold, with temperatures dropping to a little below zero at night, however, winter days are beautiful with comfortable temperatures.
Although not directly embraced with major scenic attractions, Gauteng is considered the gateway to Southern Africa. Many spectacular destinations are just a short flight or drive away.
Some popular tourist attractions within the area include: - The Cradle of Humankind - featuring the Sterkfontein Caves, and the Wonder Cave Kromdraai.
They house significant hominid remains, and as a result have been established as a World Heritage Site. - The Vaal Dam - which is a favourite venue for watersports. Numerous resorts are dotted along its shoreline.
It also provides an attraction for a great diversity of birdlife. - Greater Johannesburg - with its shopping malls (Sandton, East Gate, West Gate, East Rand Mall), as well as the Johannesburg Zoo,
and the fascinating Museum Afrika. - Pretoria (City Centre) - which is the home of the Union Buildings, and the Voortrekker Monument.
Burnett Street offers all night partying and great food. - Gold Reef City - a popular and historical amusement park.
- Soweto - "South West Township", explore the struggle for freedom on a guided shebeen tour.
Nearby attractions include: - Travelling east to Mozambique, and the world-famous Kruger National Park (around 4-5 hours drive).
- Sun City, and the Pilanesberg National Park.
- The Drakensberg mountain range - only three hours drive away.
