The Free State lies in the heart of South Africa, with the Kingdom of Lesotho nestling in the hollow of its bean-like shape. On the 9th of June 1995 its name was changed from the Orange Free State to just that of the Free State.
Between the Vaal River in the north and the Orange River in the south, this immense "rolling prairie" stretches as far as the eye can see. This central region is characterised by endless wheat, sunflower and maize fields, and forms the principle bread basket of South Africa. In addition, it also has some of the most productive gold and diamond mines in the world.
Major tourist attractions within the area include: - Bloemfontein - the province's capital (which is also South Africa's judicial capital)
- The Gariep Dam - one of the biggest dams in South Africa.
- Golden Gate Highlands Park - a famous park situated in the north of the Drakensberg Mountains.
- Take a tour of the peaceful Intabazwe Township (just outside Harrismith).
- Maluti Mountains - located in the QwaQwa Conservation Area offers ideal hiking trails.
