The Elephant Sanctuary is nestled in the Magaliesberg Mountains, 1 hour from Johannesburg and Pretoria, 4km from the Hartbeespoort Dam. The sanctuary lies in natural indigenous bush and is home to various local species of animals, small mammals, and 350 bird species, as well as a visible family of meerkats. The sanctuary offers an exciting, fully comprehensive elephant experience. Guests can also take part in the overnight elephant experience program which includes various activities such as observing, walking, feeding and forming relationships and bonds with these amazing pachyderms.
Accommodation is offered in our Indo-African designed Main Lodge, which has 5 luxury suites. Your room shares a common wall with one of our elephant's stables - you will be amazed how quiet they actually are! There is a covered patio and lounge for relaxing / reading, and a secluded swimming pool in the forest a few steps from the lodge. The main deck overlooks the elephant boma, adjoining a curio shop with interesting mostly elephant related items, and a fully licensed bar. Additional accommodation is also offered in Bush Lodge designed for outdoor living, with its wide verandah that overlooks the pool area. Its wooden decks, thatch bar / lounge and well established trees make it an oasis within the bushveld. The lodge has 6 suites and has been designed to make our guests feel relaxed, comfortable and welcome. The rooms are tastefully appointed, with subtle bushveld browns and softer cream tones and sumptuously dressed beds.
Three tours take place daily, seven days a week throughout the year. It is a one of a kind elephant interaction and a real experience for the young and the old. Guests are guided in small groups on foot through The Elephant Sanctuary. Guides will provide in depth information and insight into African elephants. You will be introduced to our elephants in the forest area, and here you will be able to touch and interact with the elephants. You will see the special relationship that the elephant handlers share with their elephants and become a part of it. Take the Brits R512 (past Lanseria Airport) to Hartbeespoort Dam. Cross dam over open bridge and turn right at T-junction, onto four-way stop at the Craft Market (garage on right hand side and one opposite as well). Turn left and travel 2.5km to The Elephant Sanctuary. We are situated on the left hand side of the road.
From Pretoria
Follow route to Hartbeespoort Dam. Travel through tunnel. At the four-way stop at the Craft Market, go straight over, continue 2.5km to The Elephant Sanctuary. We are situated on the left hand side of the road.
