The main feature of the Eastern Cape is its astonishing coastline. With its wide open sandy beaches, secluded lagoons and towering cliffs, the Indian Ocean coastline provides the province with a rich natural tourist attraction, which is also a paradise for watersports enthusiasts.
Added to the diverse coastal experiences - are more than 60 state-owned game reserves and more than 30 private game farms, which collectively cover an area greater than the Kruger National Park. This makes the Eastern Cape an ideal spot for "big five" game viewing, whilst still having the option of travelling along the coastline.
Major tourist attractions within the area include: - The bustling cities of Port Elizabeth and East London.
- The "National Park loop" - with the Tsitsikamma National Park, Addo Elephant Park and Mountain Zebra Park being your top three.
Near the Tsitsikamma Park is the famous Bloukrans Bridge, which is the world's highest bungee jump. - The National Arts Festival, held in Grahamstown, is not to be missed. This is Africa's largest and most colourful cultural event,
offering a choice of the best of both indigenous and imported talent. - Jeffreys Bay is an area with some of the country's wildest coastline, which is backed by some of Africa's most spectacular
sub-tropical rainforest. Famous for its "supertubes", it's charged with a surf vibe, which tends to soften the effect of the wealthy set who have made this part of the coast their own. - Although South Africa is not well known as a ski destination, should you find yourself in South Africa during the winter months
and would like to ski, Tiffindell Ski Resort in the southern Drakensberg, is well worth a visit.
