This restored veld cottage, situated on the seaside portion of De Mond farm, has belonged to the Kilpin family since the 1960's. The entrance gate to Cape Nature's De Mond Reserve is 300 metres down the road. This Reserve lies at the mouth of the Heuningnes River - an area between the nearby coastal villages of Arniston and Struisbaai. This unspoilt jewel of the Southern Cape Coast is a must for the discerning visitor and nature lover who is interested in coastal fynbos (especially beautiful in early spring), birds, hiking, photography and fishing etc. 180 species of birds have been identified in the area. It is also a fly fisherman's paradise.
The view of the Heuningnes River mouth can be seen from next to the plunge pool on the rise a few metres behind the cottage - what better way to enjoy a sundowner or sit and contemplate overlooking this beautiful spot? This is the place to relax from the stress of city life. Apart from enjoying the river estuary and surrounds, use the cottage as a base to visit nearby towns such as: "Bredasdorp" - for shopping, the shipwreck museum, restaurants etc. "Napier" - this attractive village is surrounded by wheat fields and is home to many artists and writers. "Arniston" - renowned for its quaint fisherman's cottages (an artist's paradise), azure blue seas in which to fish and swim. "Struisbaai" - enjoy the 14km long white sandy beach and fishing/holiday mecca. "L'Agulhas" - marks the most southerly point of Africa and the lighthouse visit is a must.
The Veld Cottage is very comfortable for 4 people with two bedrooms and two bathrooms (one en-suite). A maximum of 6 people can be accommodated with the use of the two camp beds. All bedding (cotton) and towels are provided. The kitchen is fully equipped, including stove, fridge/freezer and microwave. There is an inside 'kaggel' for warmth in winter, plus a protected outside braai (barbecue) area with a secluded 'boma' under the milkwood trees, next to the cottage. For rinsing off after a swim, there is an outside shower and wash basin. |
