Information about Augusta de Mist Country Retreat

Experience stylish country living on a historic Cape Dutch estate built 1802, centrally situated in the historic heart of Swellendam. The guest house is owner-managed, offering superb hospitality with great attention to detail, focusing on quality, comfort and style. There are 3 luxury cottages (2 kings, 1 queen), 2 garden suites (one family unit for 4 and one twin for 2) and two additional suites/rooms in the 1802 manor house.

In 2010 Augusta de Mist was renovated, revamped, redecorated and the new owners splashed out on lavish decor. The guest house went from sleepy to design and is now part of the Chic Collection (UK) and Cape Country Routes (SA). But the old world charm is still there, as AdM is set in 1.5 hectares of luxuriant gardens with much indigenous flora and an abundance of birdlife.

The spacious guest areas in and around the historic house, is where one can relax and enjoy a drink in the lounge, on the patio or on eranda overlooking the gardens. A memorable breakfast is given under the vines in summer and in front of the log fire in winter.

Also new is Augusta's African Kitchen, which stresses the Cape Table. It is strictly reserved for guests of Augusta de Mist, and puts Swellendam on the foodie map. It is essential to book ahead as meals are lovingly prepared the day of, and there is a set menu. Augusta de Mist is also known for its garagiste wines, made for us and by us by Andrew Barns of Mischa Estate.

Swellendam is the jewel of the Overberg and it is the 3rd oldest settlement in South Africa situated halfway between Cape Town and the start of the Garden Route. Swellendam is renowned for its architecture, fascinating history and great outdoor life such as horse riding, hiking, and canoeing. The area offers a variety of scenic routes which includes De Hope Nature Reserve for whale watching and its pristine beaches, the Tradouw pass to Barrydale, and the local wine route with some outstanding award- winning wines.
