Information about Anchors Away

"Anchors Away" is a Holiday House in Witsand which is situated at the mouth of the Breede River. It is a 3 hour drive from Cape Town and an excellent halfway stop en-route to Knysna. Fishing on the Breede River, recognised as the best in South Africa. Fish such as cob, spotted grunter and garrick are regularly caught in the estuary. A wide variety of water sports make this a popular weekend retreat and holiday destination. In the winter months between May and November the bay becomes South Africa's "Whale nursery" when the Southern Right whales arrive to mate and calve.

Anchors Away is perched up on the hill above the river and has the most wonderful 180 degree views of the river, river mouth and out to sea. The house consists of 2 bedrooms and a small double bunk room. Main bedroom upstairs has a king-size bed and a single bed which has an en-suite bathroom with shower. The other bedroom has twin beds (which are normally made up as a king-size bed - they can be split if requested) and has a bathroom with shower and bath. There is another small room with a double bunk. All bedding provided including electric blankets for the cold winter nights. There is a large open plan lounge / dining room and kitchen which steps down into an open plan braai (barbecue) room. The lounge has a fireplace, TV (with DSTV - please bring own card), DVD player and radio. Dart board and many other games are provided to keep you entertained. The kitchen is fully fitted with all you need including a dishwasher and washing machine.

There is an open green belt in front of the house with a path leading to the beach of the river. Take a drive to the De Hoop Nature Reserve or to the Malagas via the Pont which is the only hand-drawn pontoon in the country. Cruise up the Breede River. The area offers excellent bird watching and is an important breeding ground for the rare Blue Crane and the endangered African Black Oystercatcher. Horse riding and Hotel with restaurant and friendly fisherman's pub 5 minutes away. There is also a pizza restaurant and two small convenience stores which stock all you could need.
